Artists of Scotland – Jeremy Sutton Hibbert

In January 2023 Jeremy Sutton Hibbert visited the studio to take portraits for his photography project Artists of Scotland. I had just returned from a weekend trip to Amsterdam with dear friends, the studio had not been worked in for a few weeks. The winter light was harsh and I was tired (in the best way) also a little nervous – getting photos taken isn’t a favourite thing of mine – is it anyones?

As soon as I met Jeremy in person, he made me feel at ease and we yapped all the way through the session. It was really interesting watching him work and consider the best place for me to stand, how to capture Orkney’s light as it shone and dimmed in the same second. He talked with fondness of other studios that he had visited and shared snippets of conversations that happen when he is doing his work. Jeremy asked questions about my creative process and his interest made me feel like it mattered. The kids were off school due to a strike so my teenage son came in and said hello. Jeremy then headed up the road to the studio of Louise Barringoton’s – another Orcadian artist that features in the collection

On the 11th October – 17th November, Jeremy’s Artists of Scotland will be showcased in Dunoon – if you are in the area, pop along to see it. You may have seen the first exhibition in Glasgow but with new studio shots added since then , it looks even more exciting than before. The collection of studio portraits is a sneaky peak into spaces, often unseen, an exciting selection of very interesting Scottish artists – some I’ve been lucky enough to meet, others that are names long admired.

How wonderful to be part of a bigger picture. Thank you Jeremy for visiting my studio all the way up North in Orkney.

Here I am as a poster girl alongside Douglas Gordon…
